DPG Media won a second broadcasting license during the 2023 auction of Dutch national FM-radio frequencies
Together with Auctiometrix.
DPG Media (owner of Qmusic and Joe) asked e-Conomics and Auctiometrix for support in the preparation of the Dutch auction of national FM-radio frequencies in 2023.
Our services included:
- Identifying potential bidders and auction outcomes.
- Modelling post-auction competition for different auction outcomes.
- A cash flow analysis for Qmusic and 1 or 2 additional radio brands (accounting for synergies and different competitive scenario’s).
- Discovery and articulation of objectives.
- Developing a bidding strategy.
- Developing a simulation game for testing and fine-tuning the bidding strategy.
- Organizing auction seminars/workshops with the bidding team and c-level management.
- Setting up the war room.
- Guidance during the auction.
Results
A primary objective of DPG Media was to launch a second radio brand alongside Qmusic. This goal has been accomplished, enabling the Dutch audience to now tune in to ‘Joe.’
The acquisition of the additional license by DPG Media came at the expense of a third license for the competitor Mediahuis. Talpa also had to relinquish a license, a result of auction regulations stipulating that one entity could not secure more than three licenses, whereas Talpa held four.

Our support contributed to the DPG Media’s success during the auction, changing the Dutch radio landscape.
